T1: Art Museums As a Place For Social Interventions and Possibly Social Innovation!

Can art museums be a place where social interventions happen? If so, what would it look like and how would they be designed?

1. Which focus area are you feeling drawn to?

Creating space for in-depth empathy through design research as an art form, utilizing local/public museums and spaces for community building and community design research projects that sheds light on social issues, museums as places for social interventions, visual storytelling through community archives, public collections, etc.

2. Why?

So much of the museum world, particularly for the fine art, is structured to create the feeling of exclusivity. Unwelcoming and grandiose architecture, elitist social behaviors, and high admission fees contribute to create this atmosphere of exclusion. People are regularly priced out of getting to see extraordinary objects or are made to feel like they don't belong in certain kinds of cultural spaces.

The cliche that museums are not about 'having fun' hides a meaning: that your visit will not be structured to help you enjoy better what you already know, or to know better what you already know, or to tell you what you don't know. In the final instance it will be about being told that there are things you don't know and that are knowable, only not to you.

At the museum, social groups and individuals are involved in a silent struggle among groups and within each individual to define what culture is. However, they also come united by similar interests in culture and art.

Good museum workers try to empower their audience. The real purpose of collecting art was not to make the rich even more richer but it was to serve the people by preserving treasures that somehow would improve our existence. And because there are people who still believe in this purpose, a creative force from the underground, which are academics and artists who now see their purpose not as revealing truth or beauty, but as achieving social and political transformation are slowly but surely bringing something new to the table.

3. Unseen Opportunities

Many towns that have poor museums and libraries are filled with individuals who have these extraordinary collections in their homes, which are often filled with things that most museums and libraries wouldn't put on display anyway. People don't see the same artworks from the the same social position so the way they have collected things has been different too.

Finding meaning in ordinary things that tell extraordinary stories is what I want to experiment with through my thesis project. Through design research, I want see if museums can be a place where communities, cities, and possibly even the next generation can be empowered to rethink the possibility and social impact communities can have when working with their local art museums.

4. Why not go digital?

"Following" isn't creating culture, and r"e-blogging" isn't the same as responding and opening up a productive conversation or a stream of thought. Getting people in a room together to look at things and discussing their meaning is a whole lot more satisfying than watching online interactions. I believe collecting things and sharing them can be a gateway to stronger connections with others.

5. What will be your greatest strength and greatest challenge when it comes to doing your thesis? Why?

My greatest strengths are the following:

- Designing and leading workshops

- Listening and being attentive to the person in front of me

- Asking deep and interesting questions

- Data visualization and digital graphic design

- Storytelling

Greatest Challenges:

- not being a part of the "fine art world"

- not having art or curatorial background to understand the full context

- the problem scope isn't detailed yet

I am creating an interactive experience for communities and art museums to come together to research, design, and exhibit stories that reflect social issues that are happening today.
